Lancet House

Built

c. 1340

Listing

Grade II*

Scope

Survey, repair, interiors

Duration

22 months

Area

310 m²

A redundant chapel made into a house for two, without losing the height of the nave.

Lancet House was a parish chapel until 1971, then a store for a builders' merchant. The nave was sound, the glass was not, and someone had laid a concrete floor over the graves.

What we did

We lifted the concrete, recorded what lay beneath and laid limecrete with underfloor heat. Living rooms sit in the nave at full height. Bedrooms are in a freestanding oak frame at the west end that touches the walls nowhere.

In the rooms

“It still feels like a chapel when the sun comes through. It just has a kitchen now.”
